What Students Are Saying About...
  • Diane"Emily's knowledge as a trainer of natural horsemanship is comprehensive. This is complimented by her ability to teach horsemanship skills in an interactive and easily understood manner. Emily is able to address the needs of both the horse and the human in a fluid way that helps build a strong and balanced relationship.

"What I appreciate about Emily as a business owner is her attention to detail in the care and training of the horses. It is also apparent to me that Emily consistently looks for ways to improve all aspects of MRHT.

"Her focus on continued growth for herself and her business compliments my own desire for ongoing and enriching growth for myself as a horse owner."

    - Diane

Martha"I have had the opportunity to observe a lot of things about Emily and her business in the short time we have worked together. I am a stickler for details, and I don't miss much about what is going on around me in the 'little' things. I have been very impressed with how Emily runs her business, her sense to detail, and her overall professionalism. I have been amazed as well by her clear boundaries and the way she puts her respect and love for the horse first in everything she does.

"After just a few lessons with Emily, I visited some of my horse friends. As I watched my friend catch, tack and saddle her horse, I realized how much I had learned from Emily about how to treat a horse considerately and respectfully through just a few lessons with her. Despite her age, Emily knows more about horses than anyone I have ever met."

    - Martha

Mary"Emily has created and works hard to maintain a well run facility for the horses and clients of MRHT. The grounds are peaceful and clean and benefit from frequent improvements. The horses are well cared for and the safety of both horses and people is clearly the paramount priority.

"Emily's teaching style respects horse and person alike. She is conscious and considerate of each individual's learning style and she caters to the needs of each student based on where they are in the learning process.

"Emily is very knowledgeable and her ability to teach people how to have a mutually respectful relationship with a horse in a comprehensive and effective way is unmatched. She is creative in her teaching and exudes her passion for raising respectful and confident horses in all that she does. Her guidance helped me connect to my inner process, out of which I was able to understand and relate to the horse in a way I have never experienced."

    - Mary

Hilary"If you'd like to get to know your horse better in a safe and supportive environment, I can think of no one better to do so with than Emily in her wide variety of horsemanship programs. You'll come to love and understand your equine partner so much more. Kudos to Emily and the MRH program - you are so great!"

    - Hilary

Maurita"Last summer I attended a week long course with one of the big name natural horsemanship clinicians. I can honestly say that in a 2 hour lesson on ground skills and a one and a half hour lesson on riding I learned more from Emily Johnson than I did during that whole week (and at a fraction of the cost)! Anyone that wants to propel their horsemanship forward and to a higher level or learn to just stay safe and have fun needs to work with Emily Johnson at Mountain Rose Horsemanship!"

    - Maurita

Margaret"Early in my horsemanship learning with Emily she helped me learn how to string sentences together with my horse. Now I feel like I can string together paragraphs! I can do so much without fear, and almost everything else without immobilizing fear. After all the problems initially, my horse and I are in a joyful season. I think of you often, because the horsemanship foundation is entirely MRH based, and my emotional health is thanks in large part to you and the MRH program."

    - Margaret

Devon"I wanted to share a very exciting story with you! I've been working with some new rescue horses and yesterday the owner's husband said to me, 'My wife paid you a big compliment, she says you really know your stuff when it comes to working with horses and she's very impressed.' I definitely wanted to share with you the feedback I'm getting from fellow horse enthusiasts because of my work in the MRH program! As a testament to your program and a thank you for creating a method of learning that allows me to deeper connect with the equine world - I thank you!!!"

    - Devon

  • Feather"When I was originally looking for a riding teacher, I called five different trainers. Emily is the only one who returned my call. How fortunate for me!

"Emily's commitment to equipping humans' to communicate with the horse in the horse's language is evident in every breath she takes. The outcome is a fantastic partnership between my horse and I. No matter what lesson she is teaching, it is always done with respect and reverence for the horse.

"Emily is one of the most gifted teachers I know. She is articulate, confident and consistently encourages her students to be active learners.

"What I have most appreciated about Emily throughout my horsemanship journey is that she has believed in me while I was learning to believe in myself.

"I think that anyone looking for a respectful, connected and fun partnership with a horse will find satisfaction and tremendous growth under Emily's instruction. I am so grateful that I get to continually learn from her. I could watch her play with horses all day long!"

    - Feather

Nini"In the years I have been associated with Emily and Mountain Rose Horsemanship Training, I have grown in ways I never imaged. Once fearful of riding and nervous around horses, I am now more knowledgeable about horses, myself, and the ways the two combine to become true horsemanship.

"Under Emily's tutelage, I gained the confidence and skills that recently led me to purchase my own horse and to develop a relationship with my mare that has enriched my life in numerous ways.

"Emily is truly a natural horsewoman. She possesses innate skill and wisdom in her understanding of horses and humans alike. Her talent as a teacher matches her competence as a trainer and horsewoman. She understands the learning process allowing her to develop meaningful relationships with her students while conducting her programs in a very professional manner. She accomplishes all this in a safe, organized and fun environment."

    - Nini

Josh"To the uneducated eye, what Emily can do with horses appears magic. Even better, is that she can teach you to understand the special language of the horse, the knowledge of which allows her to speak so fluently with them. At this point, you realize it is not magic, but is awesome nevertheless!

"Through this learned language a door opens into a new landscape filled with true connection and partnership with these beautiful animals, bringing forth inspiration and joy. And if one is interested, there is even more on offer. The process of learning to communicate with horses invites an increasing awareness of each individuals energetic presence, leadership style and relational habits, inviting growth and personal improvement on the road to partnership.

"Thank you Emily for the gifts shared through your Wholeness Through Horsemanship curriculum."

    - Josh

Kathy"Emily, being a clinician is truly your art and your service. I have great respect for you and how you coached me to load my horse, Corazon, into the trailer verses just doing it for me. You have a special blend of intelligence, sensitivity and flexibility that most trainers do not. You are a rock star — the world awaits you! I would LOVE to have you come to my ranch and offer a clinic for some of my students."

"I am so grateful for Emily's instruction. In my 33 years of being in the horse world, Emily is the best instructor I have had the pleasure of working with. Her ability to teach horses and humans about true partnership is extraordinary and it brings out the best in both."

Shelly"Before I began taking Mountain Rose Horsemanship courses I felt all out of sorts. I was doubting my abilities, my instincts and whether or not I needed to look for another, more capable home for my mare. I laid awake at night worrying about my mare and I making it work for both of us...mutually beneficial as Emily has said many times. I can't tell you in words how much I appreciate all Emily and her terrific program has done for us since then. I finally feel "worthy" of my mare ,like a leader she can look up to, someone who will support her with gentleness and reassure her when she needs it. And in turn I get a wonderful, attentive horse that is willing to trying just about anything I give her as long as she has my support. So thank you for us the confidence and guidance as as well for your wisdom and patience as we journey forward in our partnership!"

    - Shelly

Tim"After having a small experience with the "internationally-known trainers", Emily is every bit as accomplished as they and a very patient instructor."

Hara"Emily is a phenomenal teacher and horsewoman. She teaches the fundamentals of horsemanship step by step, building confidence is her students while supporting partnership with the horses. Her love and passion for horses runs deep and shines powerfully. Her commitment to knowing and teaching the language of the horse is clear and the balance of honoring the emotional experience with the implementation of technique is impeccable. She so beautifully holds the space for us to explore the connection with our horse, allowing us to discover all the tools we need to experience success in our horsemanship. She is clear, committed, consistent and congruent in all aspects of her life's work. I am grateful and honored to call her my teacher."

    - Hara

"Emily is the best teacher I have come across. Her eyes light up when she is at work. You know this is what she loves and it is evident that she wants to inspire you to feel the same. I always enjoy Emily's confidence in her teaching, her strong audience connection. Her blend of professionalism with transparency makes it comfortable for a learner to connect to the learning process. The fact that Emily regards the horse as such an honorable being speaks volumes."

Hara "I have been several clinics with Emily Johnson and taken regular private lessons with her for more than a year. Emily possesses a passion for people and horses along with an ability to softly remove barriers in each. Emily presents an atmosphere of nonjudgmental observations that nurture a spirit of positivity and learning for both the student and horse.

"Under Emily's instruction I was both encouraged and inspired to become a helmet wearer after many years of riding without one. Making that change alone in my horsemanship skills was worth all the money spent for clinics and lessons as I have come to now realize the great importance and high value of my safety as I seek to then guide my horse in managing her safety. Through Emily's program I earned how to achieve softness and understanding in all communications with my horse, Rose and working with and riding horses has become much more rewarding because I now know how to interpret a horse's demeanor.

"The knowledge gained by attending Mountain Rose Horsemanship clinics and lessons has and will continue to enhance my everyday interaction with these grand beings. In my daily interactions with my mare there is a moment that I reflect back to a kind word of wisdom that Emily gave during a lesson or clinic. I have used these words and phrases to solve or avoid many problem situations.

"Thank You Emily for your patience and gracious teachings that have helped me on my journey to become a better horseman.”

    - Duane

  • Nini"Recently I participated in Emily's 4-day intensive clinic. I came away with new insights into my horsemanship as well as a heightened awareness of learned patterns in myself that impact my horsemanship and my personal and business relationships.

"Under Emily's tutelage I acquired new tools and reinforced existing skills. The clinic helped me find balance in my seat, ride various gaits confidently, to develop body awareness and appreciate how it affects my riding.

"Through lunge-line lessons and a variety of riding exercises and patterns Emily provided valuable feedback and support in my attempt to improve my riding. Of great value was her emphasis on what went right during a riding exercise, not on what was wrong. She insisted I focus on the positive before addressing what needed correction. When I found myself tightening up, doubting myself or resisting the natural rhythm and flow of the horse, Emily encouraged me to "trust". This simple word holds so much truth and power - not only in that moment of challenging my horsemanship - but in how I live my life as well.

"Focusing on the positive, learning to trust, developing confidence and being receptive to feedback (equine and human) are part of Emily's teaching platform that enriched me as a participant both inside and outside the riding arena.

"As a horsewoman and clinician Emily exemplifies being in relationship with the horse and demonstrates how meaningful and pure that partnership can be. Watching her work is truly inspiring! Since returning from the clinic, I have enthusiastically embraced my new skills and awareness and enjoy my time with my own horse more than ever."

    - Nini

Diane"I recently attended a 4 day clinic on finding my independent seat with Emily. The changes that came about are wonderful for me and my horse! I find myself at a whole new level of being relaxed and balanced in the saddle, much more "at one" with my horse.

"Emily is an amazing teacher. Her knowledge of horses combined with her intuitive sense of where you and the horse are at create a wonderful flow of focused learning in a very organic manner. Emily has been my teacher for 5 years and I experienced her at a whole new level of her personal understanding of the relationship between horse and human at every level. Her holistic approach of body, mind, and spirit really helps me to integrate the learning fully and embody a whole new level of relaxed beingness with the horse. I highly recommend what ever Emily has to offer!"

    - Diane

Wendy"Having just arrived back home, I sure miss being at Emily's ranch and having the opportunity to hang with horses day after day. Being back to my 'regular' life is kind of depressing!

"I've been thinking a lot about all the things that I learned while I was there. They seem to fall into a few broad categories, such as the facts related to horsemanship and riding, and how my body behaves and reacts while doing those things. I also realized that the multi-day forum provided valuable learning opportunities that would be difficult to duplicate in other situations. Different things just come up when you're spending a bunch of hours with a horse. It seems that the horse is always testing the fidelity and limits of your leadership, and that some of that doesn't become apparent immediately. So if all of your horsey sessions are of short duration, you may not experience some of the many ways that the relationship is tested.

"Although the lessons were many, there are a couple of 'most valuable lessons' that I wanted to share.

"During my three day intensive with Emily I have become much more aware of where in my body I hold onto tension, and how that relates to my balance and center of gravity. I have always tended to tense up my chest and shoulders, but realizing that I did that as a reaction to feeling out of balance was a new insight. Now I get a sense of a lower center of gravity much more of the time. It was the stuff I did in the saddle that triggered these thoughts. I can still kind of feel the posting trot, which I loved. It felt like my chest and shoulders were suspended and floating. Very cool.

"I also realized that we are not doing either ourselves or the horses any favors when we allow them to get by with behavior with us that would not be tolerated by the other horses in the herd. The smallest things that might be interpreted anthropomorphically as 'loving' or 'cute' could be the start of a trend of behaviors that could ultimately get the horse in real trouble. I sort of knew this intellectually before, but until I experienced some of those things firsthand I didn't realize just how subtle some of those behaviors might be, and how challenging it is to be and remain a diligent and attentive leader from the horse's point of view. Interestingly, a similar situation occurred during the class at CTRC on Saturday when I had to stop Lady from rubbing her face on me. If she did that with a lightweight little kid it could be dangerous. It took me a little while to realize that. We probably only touched the surface of the may ways that those little 'are you still the leader?' conversations can mainfest.

"Most of all, thank you, Emily, for recognizing those points when I was getting ready to give up on making any more progress, and helping me push through them. You are a treasure!"

    - Bonnie

  • Morgan"Some people are good at what they do, while others are great at it. Emily is the latter - truly great at what she does. Her connection with horses is extraordinary.

"I have two horses that I board and have in training with Emily. Her ability to sense what is going on in the brain and body of my horses' is unique even for horse people. Further profound is her ability to read my body's intentions equally as well as she reads and responds to the horse. Combining these abilities Emily tailors her training to provide whatever is needed at the time to enable my horse and myself to learn new skills and behaviors most effectively.

"Emily has a huge knowledge of horses, yet she remains open to fresh ideas. She is continually coming up with innovative, fun ways to learn which she customizes to fit each person and individual horse. I value that Emily teaches all aspects of horsemanship, from health care and horse handling to riding techniques.

"It is obvious to me that Emily genuinely cares about the welfare of each horse boarded at her barn. It is a gift to me to know that my two horses are happy at her facility. Additionally, as a benefit to me, Emily has attracted a neat group of people, boarders and clients alike, that are fun and enjoyable for me to be around."

    - Morgan

Julie"From the moment Emily came to pick up my horse, I knew I had chosen the right trainer. I was very concerned that my mare would not load into the trailer, but after a short period of time with Emily, my horse was willingly going in and out of the trailer. I was amazed!

"Within the first week with Emily, my horse changed from a disrespectful and stubborn youngster to a cooperative and attentive horse. My amazement and appreciation for Emily grew in the proceeding months and continues to this day.

"As a result of Emily's training, I now know that I have a lifelong equine partner.

"Thank you so much Emily for all your innate talent, hard work, clear instruction and dedication to myself and my horse!"

    - Julie

Teresa"Being a part of Mountain Rose Horsemanship Training has been a wonderful experience for both my horse and I. Before coming to MRHT I was unsure if I should keep my horse. Training her was too much for me to tackle alone and none of the trainers I talked to, before meeting Emily, had the natural horsemanship philosophy I was wanting.

"I am so thankful that I did in fact keep my mare, as otherwise I would not have met Emily and had the wonderful riding horse I do today! I can say with certainty that it has been well worth every minute and dime I have put into this relationship. My mare and I have learned to work as partners in everything we do. I no longer feel the frustration and edginess that was once so familiar working with my horse. Emily has given me the tools to be the leader my horse desires in our relationship.

"I am greatly looking forward to being a part of Emily's ever-growing and improving curriculum. I believe that my horse and I can continue to grow in amazing ways under Emily's direction, well into the future."

    - Teresa

Lynn"Emily — I couldn't be more pleased with your progress with my horse! It is hard for me, as a trainer of 25 years to 'let go' and let someone else do my work. I have only found a handful of trainers who I trust with my horses, you are now among them! So many folks I know and have watched over the years, training big time, expensive horses do it with such a heavy hand, an extreme lack of patience and moreover lack a true horse training knowledge. They might get temporary results, but their horses don't last, physically or most importantly mentally and emotionally. My whole history with horses has been building youth and amateur all-around show horses that are SAFE, trustworthy and sweet. I have seen these horses take riders through all their youth show years and move on to new owners still carrying their ears forward with a happy expression about their job. I firmly believe that if a horse is brought along correctly in their foundation and built correctly with kind hand, they will give their heart to you forever. Thank you for all that you are doing, I can tell you truly love horses, as I do, and that you are not 'burnt out' with your work. You go girl!"

Andi"I strongly believe that people come into our lives for a reason and at the right time. That is how I feel about Emily and her horsemanship program. I was coming to a crossroads with my gelding, Scout, and was searching for a direction to go. I heard about Emily and learned more from her website. After several calls back and forth with Emily where she really listened to my concerns with Scout, she suggested that we take her Horsemanship 101 clinic that was occurring in a few weeks. Needless to say, my hope of being able to work with Scout in partnership became a reality after that very first clinic.

"Emily then created a personalized training program for Scout for the next month which led us into being emotionally prepared to participate in her Horsemanship 201 clinic. This included her working one on one with Scout regarding groundwork skills and riding skills as well as several private lessons with him and I to show me what they had been working on and for me to practice the skills as well. During that month, I also continued to develop my own leadership skills by participating in the Discover Your Leader Within classes.

"I can honestly say (with very relieved and happy tears) that Scout and I have come so far already with our partnership! Emily has been a great teacher/encourager/supporter along our journey. Emily met us where we were at and was so down to earth and a great listener to our needs/wants/goals. The manner in which she teaches by explaining the why behind what you are doing, then showing how to do it, then walking you through the skills, then allowing you the opportunity to practice and learn from them is my way of learning. She also breaks down skills into manageable steps that are easy to follow and understand them, to build upon at your pace/confidence level.

"In just a little over a month, Scout has learned that he can be with people in a positive manner and he has become “soft”. I have grown into a better leader and I am already starting to do the skills on more of an “unconscious” level and not have to think so much (that is a GREAT feeling to have!). He and I will continue our partnership journey with Emily's guidance and we thank her for believing in us!!!"

    - Andi

Hilary"We found Emily through a friend who was just resuming her relationship with horses, long in abeyance. We really admired the way she worked with our friend, teaching her how to understand horses and handle herself from the ground in preparation for saddlework.

"Our own experience with horses also had been in extended hiatus until recently. We decided that our 2-year old needed to learn appropriate ground manners by someone other than us in all our well-meaning ignorance. To our delight, we watched our colt learn ground skills, be introduced to the saddle and bridle, and learn to carry a rider in partnership. He was a sharp study, as Peruvians are reputed to be, but Emily's skillful touch and gentle offering of leadership to him was inspiring to watch.

"We highly recommend Emily to anyone interested in developing a comfortable relationship with their horse as well as to those in need of addressing some kinks in the relationship."

    - Hilary

  • Wendy"I have been studying with Emily for over 5 years now and have grown so much as a horsewoman from our lessons, so I was pleasantly surprised at how my video/phone lesson with Emily allowed me to see my horsemanship from a whole new perspective. I never imagined that a 3 ½ min video could turn into a rich one hour lesson! My video lesson was with a prospective new horse and it allowed me to see what I needed to bring to the relationship in order to be an effective new partner for her. It also allowed me to see how I would need to work with the mind and emotions of my new horse. The video lesson not only helped me to make a conscious choice to purchase my new equine partner, but it also helped me to start our relationship with more understanding so that I can be aware of her needs. I would highly recommend tapping into Emily's knowledge and support through the convenient means of phone and video consultation."

    - Wendy

"After reviewing the voice-over, coaching session from Emily, I was excited to apply the advice! Specifically, Emily mentioned how my weight was on the inside leg during trotting and cantering my horse. My mare had the tendency to drop her shoulder to the inside and counter-bend - hmmm, I wonder why? I conciously made the effort to put more weight in my outside leg or seat last night during a ride. I noticed the following improvements: we did not fall into the circle, we stayed on the circle and the horse responded to this aid. Wow, could this be working?

"Additionally, I adheared to Emily's direction on rebalancing the horse after a speed up. I have a horse with emphatic impulsion and sensitivity. Great attributes, but harnassing the power is another story. After an increase in rhythm on the circle (with a high head and an all-over-the-place effort), I placed my inside leg on her, had some weight in my outside rein (rode the inside leg towards the outside rein) and she responded by balancing herself.

"In summary, Emily's clear communication and suggestions on refining the riding has resulted in a positive change. I will need to work on this more to ensure understanding, but I was surprised how these changes impacted our areas of less strengths!

"Emily is astute in her analysis and drills down to the root cause of the issue, therefore impacting the rider. Very cool!"

    - Michele

"This is the second time in less than two months that I have submitted a video for Emily to review. Both times have been extremely helpful and I will contintue to submit video's on a regular basis. Listening to Emily's clear and concise evalution and instruction while actually watching myself and my horse has brought me a much greater understanding of what I need to improve for both of us.

"In a private lesson, when Emily makes suggestions for even the slightest change, I am always impressed by the effect it has on my horse. On video, Emily makes the same suggestions and it is so much easier to see exactly what she is saying and why. It is easier to make those little changes after watching your video several times and really paying attention to your position and your horse at the exact moment that Emily is telling you what to change.

"Prior to submitting these videos I had never thought this tool could be useful. I was thrilled with the understanding I gained from the first one and submitted the second one last week, within a month of the first. None of us want to continue training our horse and ourselves only to find we have been doing it wrong or that there are improvements we can make. The use of video allows us to get great feedback that is, in some ways, better than even a private lesson. In a lesson, you can't see what you are doing - you can in a video.

"I highly recommend this tool to further your horsemanship! It is well worth the cost and leaves you with a video with Emily's comments that you can view over and over again."

"Last week I had my first video lesson with Emily. I posted a video that was 70 seconds long on YouTube. Emily and I then scheduled a time to go over it on the phone. During the call, we both had the YouTube video pulled up on our computers. We started at the same time on the video so we could be together. While I was watching myself and my horse, Emily and I talked about what we both saw. It was fantastic. I could actually see what both my horse and I were doing as I was also hearing Emily's immediate feedback about it. Emily would ask that we look at specific times on the tape and we would both look at that frame while she commented on what was correct and what could be improved. She would say, "go to 1:05 -- at that moment, your horse is exactly right. Look at the position of his body. Now go back to the beginning and lets watch the first 10 seconds, that is not as correct and this is why . . . " Though, at first, I wasn't sure that such a short clip, at only 70 seconds, would provide ample material for discussion, indeed our time by phone was packed with feedback to help me improve my horsemanship. I made notes while Emily talked so I know exactly what she said about each section of the video and I have then been able to go back countless times and watch those 70 seconds over and over. I learned a tremendous amount and was able to use it when I ride. It has made a huge difference for both my horse and my riding. This is a private lesson that I will have forever as a reference! I cannot recommend this form of instruction enough."

    - Judy

  • "Emily incorporates her solid, clear curriculum of horse communication into all of her workshops and clinics. From the Horse's Point of View was no exception. There were lots of good visuals and real world examples to support the theory being presented. You learn so much more than just the immediate topic at hand with MRH's programs. Every time I attend, I add to my understanding of how to build a real partnership with horses."

    - Meleise

"From the Horse's Point of View was very thought provoking and informative. I liked the concrete examples and general framework of the discussion. The comparison list of prey vs. predator thinking and relating was a highlight for me as well!"

    - Patricia

"I thoroughly enjoyed your "From the Horse's Point of View" lecture. I felt that you were very engaging and incredibly clear on what the topic was about and I loved your enthusiasm for horses and everything horsey! I've audited Parelli clinics where they had horses and still didnt get as much from it as I did from you who didnt even have a horse. So I want to thank you for such an interesting and informative evening!"

"I just wanted to let you know that Charlie and I really enjoyed the your From the Horse's Point of View workshop. I have heard a few of the things you mentioned before, however the format you presented them, just clicked with me. I did some 'soaking' over the weekend. It really occurred to me alot of the things my horse does are him being disrespectful and acting alpha towards me. I just want to thank you for allowing everyone to be a part of this great journey you are on."

    - Jane

"Emily is an excellent teacher. She doesn't miss a beat! As I'm thinking of questions, she starts answering them in her presentation. The From the Horse's Point of View was an excellent presentation."

    - Jim

Jenn"I attended your recent lecture titled From the Horse's Point of View and I wanted to let you know that you are undoubtedly one of the most organized and thoroughal speakers I have listened to. It is not that I haven't heard some of what you said before but the way you presented it was outstanding. My only wish is that my proximity allowed me to attend clinics or lessons on an ongoing basis with you and your program! Thank you for a great evening!"

    - Jenn

  • Traci"I have been looking for a way to learn more about horses, but everything I have tried seemed so goal-oriented rather than being about the relationship with the horse.

"Fortunate for me, I found Mountain Rose Horsemanship Training. I now realize that the piece I had been desiring was instruction on how to communicate with and be alongside horses, which was exactly what I got from Discover the Leader Within! In this workshop I learned as much about myself as I did about horses, their behavior and how they interact with the world.

"Emily created a fun, encouraging, safe, respectful, and non-judgmental environment to learn about being in partnership with the horse. She is a wonderful teacher who presents the material in many different ways (verbal, written, experiential) allowing the information to sink in on a variety of levels.

"I'm so excited to further explore my relationship with horses and how I can be a part of helping to make the world a better place for them. I would definitely take this course again and certainly recommend it to anyone looking to come alongside horses in a meaningful way.

"Taking Discover the Leader Within for a second time helped clarify some concepts that I had forgotten. Being a part of the course helped me polish my timing and be around horses with a greater relaxation and flow. I feel an even greater level of confidence and clarify. Thank you Emily!"

    - Traci

Teresa"Through MRHT's Discover the Leader Within I was able to further discover a leader in me that I thought I had been fully accessing before. But, because of this course, I now realize there was an even greater potential for me to tap in to when it came to demonstrating leadership both in my life and in my partnership with my horse."

    - Teresa

Laura"The Discover Your Leader Within course was a perfect starting place for me as a beginner with very little knowledge of horses. The content was centered on understanding the horses language and what we need to do as humans to be successful in our communication with them. The course was conducted in a friendly and comfortable setting which made for a wonderful learning experience and an easy place to share personal thoughts and feelings. This course provided an excellent foundation for my horsemanship journey and I highly recommend it to anyone who is just starting out with horses, as well as to the experienced horsemen who want to build a better relationship with horses."

    - Laura

Diane"Discover the Leader Within was my first course with Emily and her teaching skills are outstanding. The pace was relaxed and the class was packed with the perfect amount of information. I was close to giving up on horse ownership and this course has helped rekindle my desire to learn and improve in my horsemanship journey. As someone who owns a horse and has spent a great deal of time around horses, it was wonderful and very rewarding to revisit the basics for a fresh start and a positive perspective!"

    - Diane

Leona"MRHT's Discover the Leader Within course helped me see how the qualities of credible leadership (clear, committed, consistent and congruent) get carried out in "real" life and provided me with a better understanding of how to apply them when communicating with the horse. I think this course offers valuable benefits at any stage in the horsemanship journey and not just as a prerequisite to the Horsemanship 101."

    - Leona

Holley"The Discover the Leader Within course helped me gain more confidence in my fellowship with the horse. I discovered that healthy self esteem is integral to being able to offer the horse leadership in our partnership. I learned some avenues of positive self-talk to boost my self-esteem, helping me to work with the horses with a greater confidence. I recommend this course to people with no horse or past horse horse experience and escepially to people with 'old school' experience with horses as it is the perfect guide to help you learn how to communicate with horses in a more fulfilling and mutually beneficial way."

    - Holley

Tanya"Thanks Emily for your wonderfully insightful and witty style. I very much enjoyed learning from and growing with your support. I have a much greater confidence now with horses!"

    - Tanya

Autumn"Thank you for putting so much effort into teaching the people how to have not just a relationship, but a partnership with horses, rather than how to make a horse do things. It is great to see so many people wanting to learn this incredible way of being with horses!"

"I've owned horses for years and attended numerous clinics. But this is the first time I've realized that I can become a horseman. The information in the classroom and the hands-on round pen experiences gave me understanding and confidence."

    - Anne

"The feeling that everything was on the table, no questions went unasked and it was the entire group supporting and going through the motions together as a team, but each learned on their own individual pace.Having done H101 before this course and then taking H101 afterwards, I would almost be tempted to make Leader Within a prerequisite but not sure if that would help or hurt your H101 enrollment. I think it would very beneficial to beginning "natural" horsemanship. Learning how my body position and pressure really effects the softness, or lack thereof, in my horse. Every time I work with her I think ""what is the least I can do to to get her to move".Before I was just thinking what the hell can I do to get her to move :) Then there's my confidence of course....you gave me permission to use force with my horse when appropriate, to keep myself safe and to be effective. Having worked with all sorts of animals, and with rescue, softness has always been the name of the game. And fully knowing that's how equines operate as well, it's also pertinent to know that unlike most of the animals I train, they can't hurt me nearly as much as my horse could potentially. So thank you for showing me the appropriate way to form a partnership of respect."

    - Shelly

"I liked the discussions and the hands-on learning. Each individual got their time to work with the horse and be successful. That was very important. Emily teaches in a way people can understand. I'm not sure if it is her down to earth language or her total knowledge of her job, but she is easy to understand."

    - Janet

"There were a few things I liked about the clinic. It gave me an opportunity of being around horses and having you explain the how and why of their behavior. I was also able to work on my fear and build my confidence when around horses. I have been reading about horsemanship, but I wasn't able to really understand until I saw you demonstrate. I liked the small group,it was beneficial to see how others worked on skills. Yes, my anxiety was really up at first being in the round pen, but I felt very safe and you gave great direction and feedback. I liked the classwork and helping us to look at ourselves. Working from whole to part especially makes sense to my learning style."

    - Jayne

Francesca"I just finished an amazing weekend of learning with Emily in the Discover Your Leader Within/Roundpen Reasoning Clinic. The weekend started off with a terrific lecture and the subsequent two days were hands on work with the horses. If you want to discover anything about yourself, your horse and your relationship with horses, this clinic is a must! No matter what, you will leave the weekend with so much more then what you thought you would ever get out of it. If you love horses and want to learn more about them, this clinic should definitely be on your bucket list. Emily is phenomenal; she pus her whole self (and then some!) into making the weekend an enjoyable, fun and successful learning experience. It was well worth the cost and time to attend!"

    - Francesca

Maureen"As many times as I have heard it before, through this clinic I finally, really understood what it means to be in partnership with my horse, versus that of a pet relationship. With a horse, it is so important that we know what to expect from each other and that we each fulfill our respective roles in the partnership. We must communicate, trust and understand each other in order to accomplish our goals. It was so valuable to learn alongside others as I gain so much from watching other students and their horses. The patience Emily offers was one of the highlights for me as I was never made to feel wrong, only that I had some skills to improve. This clinic greatly clarified the concept of partnership with horses for me, and helped me realize where and how the concepts can be applied to people as well!"

    - Maureen

Reta"This clinic was a great experience! I learned so much about my horse and myself. Emily has a wonderful way of presenting and explaining things and her love for and knowledge of horses are contagious. And she has a great understanding as well of women and horses. The overall experience was so supportive and fun, the entire group was great. I had initially looked at attending several other events in and out of state this summer, but things never quite worked out and I am so thank this was the one event I made it to. I will definatley make an effort to attend other Mountain Rose Horsemanship clinics and learning events in the future."

    - Reta

Devon"I always learn so much about myself in Emily's programs and her Discover Your Leader Within course was no exception! I am so grateful to be able to learn both horsemanship and the correlating life lessons in this ever supportive and fun atmosphere!"

    - Devon

Lynn"Emily's presentation are fun and so informative! I love her openness and the gift of giving her all and attention to us! Emily demonstrates the "4 C's of Horsemanship" in every course I've participated in, with this one being no exception! I love her insight and enthusiasm. I always walk away feeling challenged to learn not only more about the horse, but also to learn more about myself!"

  • Wendy"I have been studying natural horsemanship for some time now and have attended many natural horsemanship clinics, so I was concerned that MRHT's Horsemanship 101 course would be too basic. However, I was very pleasantly surprised to find that the course offered a great deal to both me and my horse. The course focused on the relationship between horse and human and I definately got a lot out of it, as did my horse.

"Safety around horses is a very important aspect at MRHT, as it is to me. This course was helpful in demonstrating how to stay safe around horses through more effective communication with my equine partner. Respect, empathy and leadership (from the horses' point of view) were explored and there were demonstrations with a variety of horses, each with a different personality, which helped drive home these concepts.

"Emily's enthusiam and energy are infectious and her passion for the horse and for teaching pour out of her. I cannot wait to learn more!"

    - Wendy

Pam"I recently took Horsemanship 101 at MRHT. It was so wonderful to have such a great teacher. I was so impressed with Emily's natural leadership style, professionalism, skill, energy, enthusiasm, directness, sense of humor, and the attention and care she showed to each student and horse. Because of Emily's guidance, I feel motivated to continue in my horsemanship learning. There is nothing like a great teacher to inspire a person!

"The atmosphere of this course was conducted in a way that allowed me to feel safe at all times. It brought me great comfort experiencing how alert and aware Emily was at all times. I could feel her energetic sensitivity to what was going on and it eased my fears knowing she was present. Emily's sensitivity is a big reason she is such a great teacher.

"Both her instruction and the environment she created emanated with respect. She is courteous, considerate, listens intently and answers her students' questions with much thought and careful deliberation.

"One of the greatest highlights from Emily's course was the way she approached and honored my fear. She both acknowledged and validated my uneasiness and allowed me time and space to move through this fear, while consistently following up with me. I am proud to say I have conquered my fear of horses! My thanks to Emily for helping me through this fear."

    - Pam

Laura"I greatly enjoyed learning all that I did at MRHT. I am so grateful that Horsemanship 101 opened my eyes to just how much I've missed being with horses. I am thankful that through this course I was able to bring horses back into my life.

"Each time I was at Emily's ranch I enjoyed a safe experience, with the added benefit of being in a peaceful and relaxing environment. I have so much respect for Emily and her teaching of both the horses and her students. There was not a single moment in the course where I felt scared or in danger for any reason."

    - Laura

Rachel"Horsemanship 101 dramatically increased my confidence level around horses. Emily is able to put abstract concepts, about both human and equine body language, into more concrete and understandable terms, helping the learning process be more effective. I found the hands-on parts of this course extremely valuable. Horsemanship 101 is a great foundation for teaching humans and horses how to create a mutually beneficial partnership!"

    - Rachel

Karen"As someone who does not have an extensive background with horses, yet loves being around them, Horsemanship 101 provides a safe place to be with horses while learning about their world. Emily's skills and enthusiasm help you venture into the equine mind and emotions to form a successful partnership."

    - Karen

Traci"I love classes that open me up to new questions and ideas and Horsemanship 101 did just that! This weekend course taught me so much about myself and how to understand and relate to horses in a fun and very safe atmosphere."

    - Traci

Meleise"As someone who has owned and regularly ridden a horse for the past three years, I was amazed how much I learned in Horsemanship 101. It was so enlightening for me to finally understand how to truly communicate with my horse! I always knew that groundwork was important, but was pleasantly surprised to discover in this course how fun and gratifying it can be for both myself and my horse. Emily is an amazing educator for horses AND their humans!"

    - Meleise

Ruth"I owned a horse as a child and have been around them intermittently since then, but overall there has been a hiatus in my life from horses. This weekend of working with Emily and the horses in Horsemanship 101 left me feeling renewed in my horsemanship and so excited to learn more. Thanks for helping to bring horses back into my life!"

    - Ruth

Teresa"I have owned my own horse and been a part of MRHT's program for some time. I decided to re-take the Horsemanship 101 as I believed there would be value in refreshing my foundation. I temporarily stepped away from my personal horse this weekend to work with a horse that was new to me. Doing so helped me better understand where I was needing to strengthen my communication, which I know is going to carry over to serve my relationship with my horse. It was invaluable for me to revisit the basics."

    - Teresa

Leona"This was my second time through the Horsemanship 101 course. My first time participating I worked with a tried and true MRHT lesson horse who was grounded in his knowledge of the skills. Learning alongside a lesson horse helped me to build my confidence so that I knew I was actually communicating clearly. This most recent time doing the course, I brought my personal horse of five years. It was amazing to see how well she did and how far she flourished in the weekend. I also gained a very valuable awareness of exactly where she and I had become stuck in the basics, which has helped our relationship tremendously. It really helps to have another set of eyes observing our interactions. With Emily's level of experience and her gracious support, my mare and I were able to work through and move beyond of stuck places!"

    - Leona

Laura"Horsemanship 101 was a wonderful experience. The information presented was the perfect balance of classroom instruction, demonstration and hands-on horse time. I felt comfortable and confident practicing the basic skills of horsemanship in a relaxed learning environment. The learning was extensive not only from Emily, but also from the horses and the other students. Each day I learned new skills and principles that made me think deeply and introspectively. Horsemanship 101 is a great starting place for learning the horse language and for appreciating all aspects of the wonderful creature that is the horse."

    - Laura

Tim"Learning and accepting how to communicate with my horse was a revelation. The mental and emotional connection became stronger and more rewarding to me than the same old history of just man-handling the animal. Thanks to MRHT's Horsemanship 101 course, I've got a partner in my horse now, not just a ride!"

    - Tim

Darla"I have been around horses and riding for years. The MRHT Horsemanship 101 course was phenomenal! One of my goals coming to the clinic was to help my horse get excited about being with me. Now, I don't have to catch my horse — he catches me! This weekend gave me the tools I needed to become a strong leader for my horse. He now can and is willing to be my partner. Having learned the '4 Cs of Horsemanship' I can now enjoy a mutually beneficial partnership with my beloved Tennessee Walker, Bleu. Wow!"

    - Darla

Gary"The hands-on experience with the horses was really great this weekend. Some of the highlights for me where learning the language of the horse through the Friday night lecture and then getting to put it into practice. An incredible worth while weekend! Very productive and fully of very useful information!"

    - Gary

Dan"I really enjoyed the diverse group of horses and the high positive energy that Emily brought throughout the weekend. Emily's demonstrations of techniques with horses was very effective. A great course for both beginner and experienced horse folk!"

    - Dan

Stef"For a life-long equine enthusiast, I learned a huge amount of very valuable and immediately useful information to improve my relationships -- and not just with my horse!"

    - Stef

Yvette"Thank you Emily for a clear and concise seminar. The class size was just right to be able to learn from others and also get personal attention from Emily. The atmosphere was one of open and clear communication. I had many "ah-ha" moments and feel I have started to speak "horse" properly because of this weekend. Because of this course, I look forward to a better, committed partnership with my horse."

    - Yvette

Jeanine"This was a great clinic answering many of my questions about horsemanship. Very professional on the approach and non-threatening. The weekend was very conducive to learning and the presentation the Friday night before was a highlight, helping to tie all the concepts of the weekend together for me!"

    - Jeanine

Lynn"Excellent format for introduction and building of horsemanship skills. Loved the 2 1/2 day clinic format - it greatly contributed to my sense of accomplishment. Thank you Emily for your very effective teaching methods and for all you do for and with the horses!"

Hillary"I'm not really sure how I got along for so long without knowing what I learned in Horsemanship 101: What Every Horse and Human Should Know. I've been around horses for a long time, but never in the way that was introduced and taught this weekend. What an eye-opener! Emily is a fantastic teacher with a down-to-earth, accessible style. The content of the whole weekend was terrific and the Friday night lecture set the stage perfectly for the weekend ahead. This information is essential to enjoying thriving relationships with horses and I believe that any horse enthusiast needs it. This course was a huge confidence builder for me. I left feeling empowered in my horsemanship and wanting more!"

    - Hillary

Linda"I really enjoyed Emily's instruction - knowledgable, clear and concise. The classroom teaching was a great lead in to the hands on work with the horses and tied it all together throughout the weekend. The weekend provided a great way to learn the skills and understand them better. Thank you, this was a wonderful experience!"

    - Linda

Emma"Is is rare to find a fine horsewoman who is also an excellent teacher and Emily is most certainly both. Emily has brilliantly broken down the components of horsemanship into discrete, logical sequences that learners can grasp. Emily's Horsemanship 101 course is a truly excellent introduction to horsemanship. I would recommend it to all beginners and also to more experience riders who feel they are not being taken seriously enough by their horse, or those who feel like their relationship with their horse is heavy, clunky or combative at times."

    - Emma

Mike"Horsemanship 101 has provided me with the sense of confidence that I could have used six years ago when we began our equine experience. I loved the "start from the beginning" and the "clear steps of progression" method, as it was very clear and reassuring to be as a novice horseman. Emily is an excellent communicator and has a real gift as an instructor. And her zeal for improving the relationship for both horse and human is both admirable and contagious!"

    - Mike

Maria"This course was great! I valued the intimate course size as it allowed Emily to really focus on and help each one of us. I found through this course that there was so much I didn't know and I really enjoyed exploring it. I also enjoyed having the ability to practice what we learned on the obstacle course as it really helped me explore and gain feedback about both my and my horse's trust and emotions."

    - Maria

Mia"Emily is a great teacher and her horses are amazing to work with and to learn from. Horsemanship 101 is the best clinic I have participated in and I look forward to the next one with Emily."

    - Mia

Tina"Horsemanship 101 is invaluable to any horseman/horsewoman seeking a better relationship with their horse. Emily is exceptional at teaching the concepts in a way that honors the horse and human. I am looking forward to continuing this journey so very much and will be back for Emily's 201 clinic!"

    - Tina

Lucie"For someone looking for the best partnership with their horse and with a desire to glean an understanding of how the horse thinks, MRH's horsemanship clinic series (H101, H201 and H301) are of great benefit. The H101 really helped me understand how a horse thinks and reacts. My experience in this clinic was both fun, informative and very helpful and I will definitely be back for the next progression of clinics!"

    - Lucie

Lucie"I wanted to thank you for getting me off to such a good start with horsemanship. Every time I go out to a pasture and let a horse catch me, I remember the first lessons in Horsemanship 101. Ditto when I see other people marching off like predators and seeing the same horses that catch me run from them! I am really glad that I did the work with you before I ever started doing my volunteer work. I have learned so much from working with so many horses where I volunteer, but I honestly think that if I hadn't started with you I would not be where I am now.

"I was recently named Volunteer of the Year, and I wanted to give you your share of the credit for getting me off on the right hoof. I have a bit of a reputation there for being able to influence the horse's energy in a very positive way, and I started learning that from you!"

    - Bonnie

  • Traci"Horsemanship 201 greatly increased my comfort with and understanding of the techniques previously learned in MRHT's Horsemanship 101. This course furthered my insight into the importance of learning the foundational skills and helped me better understand how their progression with more advanced techniques fit together. The highlight of the course was learning how to read and relate to the different horse personality types. By understanding how to best support each type of horse, my confidence in my leadership soared because I felt knowledgable about the feedback I was receiving from the horse. This course was all about feedback and experimentation, which was such a powerful and effective way for me to learn about both horses and myself. I can't wait to learn more!"

    - Traci

Teresa"Wow! Emily has really nailed it with the Horsemanship 201. It was so easy for me to learn and grasp the concepts because of the courses cohesive flow. The weekend diminished a few of the mysteries about "horseanalities" for me. In the past I felt like I was guessing about my horse's behavior, but now, having completed H201, I have greater confidence that I can recognize my horse's ever fluctuating personality and respond in a correct and considerate way."

    - Teresa

Meleise"Horsemanship 201 really expanded on the H101 concepts and gave me a much better understanding of what I need to offer my horse depending on her mental and emotional state. Through learning horsemanship from Emily, my mare and I are experience partnership together in a way we never had. I look forward to continuing to develop my intention, feel and timing so that I may have ultimate partnership with my horse!"

    - Meleise

Ruth"Horsemanship 201 helped improve my feel for the horse and increased my creativity in how I approach and interact with obstacles. I know that the improvement in these areas will help me enjoy increasingly better relationships with horses!"

    - Ruth

Leona"Going into Horsemanship 201 I had some trepidation as to if my horse and I were sound enough in our foundational skills. But Emily's Horsemanship 201 blended the H101 skills into the new H201 skills so fluidly that my mare and I had no problem. The strong emphasis on relationships in this course really solidified for me that accomplishing the task is not the goal, but rather that honoring the relationship with my horse is what it is all about. I discovered that when the relationship is right, the tasks naturally take care of themselves! This was a great course and it helped me take that next step in furthering myself as a horsewoman and becoming more of the confident and credible leader that my equine partner so desires!"

    - Leona

Laura"Horsemanship 201: Building Rapport was a great next step in my journey towards ultimate partnership with horses. It was the perfect balance between classroom learning and hands on experience. We continued to learn the horse language by exploring horse psychology, which was extremely beneficial and interesting. It was great to be able to understand a concept, see it demonstrated and then have the opportunity to practice. Emily does a great job of consistently integrating the principles she teaches into all facets of horsemanship and presenting the information in a clear and orderly manner. It was a great experience and at the end of the weekend I felt all the more excited to continue my journey."

    - Laura

  • Michael"I love your approach to riding. It feels very mindful!"

    - Michael

Nini"Under Emily's tutelage I acquired new tools and reinforced existing skills.

I find myself at a whole new level of being relaxed and balanced in the saddle, much more 'at one' with my horse.

    - Diane

  • Meleise"Training for the Trail is a great course for anyone wanting to improve their enjoyment of riding outside of the arena by increasing their sense of safety. It is so valuable to be able to encounter the obstacles and "spook provoking situations" in the controlled and monitored clinic environment. This clinic helped me learn how to make a good, proactive plan before heading out on the trail, so that my horse and I are both set up for success."

    - Meleise

Teresa"Having taken Training for the Trail, I now have the confidence and knowledge of proper trail etiquette to be responsible for myself and my horse as well as to the safety of others when out on the trail. In this clinic I learned how to properly respond to the unexpected situations that I may encounter on the trail and how to safely manage a situation that is spooky to my horse. Having this knowledge and skills gives me so much more confidence to go out on the trail knowing I will enjoy safety and success!"

    - Teresa

Traci"Emily's clear explanation of certain techniques from the saddle and her commitment to explaining the how and why behind what we are doing, prepared me to embark on riding out in the open with confidence, knowing I had been equipped to keep myself safe. Emily is diligent about tying the riding skills back to the communication I had learned on the ground, which greatly served my learning process. The Training for the Trail clinic challenged me with appropriate incremental increases to where I always felt ready for the next step. This clinic was the first time I have ridden a horse knowing there was a solid communication between the horse and I. I loved it! As always, I can't wait to learn more!"

    - Traci

Hilary"If you would like to get to know your horse in a safe and supportive environment, I can think of no one better than Emily and her wide variety of horsemanship programs. You'll love and understand your riding partner so much more. The Training for the Trail clinic offered great demonstrations with opportunities to emulate the exercises with very helpful feedback. Kudos Emily — you are so great!"

Leona"The Training for the Trail clinic was amazing! I used a lesson horse in this clinic and having the chance to ride a confident and experienced horse was awesome and a great boost to my confidence! I felt safe and yet challenged at the same time. I am now equipped with so many things I can work on with my horses. Having taken this clinic I feel better prepared to work on my own at home, helping my horses and I be properly prepared for a great time on the trail!"

    - Leona

Holly"I love the way that Emily is able to zoom in on exactly what I need as a learner, while simultaneously teaching concepts to a whole group — that's experience! I valued the attention to detail in Training for the Trail from being safe on the trail, to being respectful of the horse, a breadth of topics were covered in the weekend. I love having the knowledge and tools to feel confident out on the trail!"

Lisa"The Training for the Trail course for me was the icy on the cake! After a myriad of clinics and lessons with Emily to establish the foundation in my horsemanship, trail riding with my own horse was my goal and here we are! All the time, effort, laughter and tears that come with the growing and learning process has led my horse and I to this wholesome relationship and allowed us to take that relationship to the trail!

"The information in this course was pertinent, usable and abundant -- covering so many worthwhile topics, such as safe trailering, to riding aids to relationship oriented riding."

    - Lisa

Kate"My horse and I really grew during MRH's Training for the Trail clinic. The clinic was very focused on trail situations and scenarios, while still teaching and supporting the general skills and concepts that support well rounded horsemanship. Emily found a wonderful blend of keeping the learning going while also my mare and I and others individually whenever a need arose. Every moment of the clinic had value as Emily was able to divide her attention among us and provide individualized feedback that benefited everyone. There were many highlights and effective exercises Emily shared that allowed my mare and I to successfully embark on a trail riding and have a fun and progressive weekend!"

    - Kate

Jen"raining for the Trail was very informative and provided real life advice for all skill levels and abilities of trail riders. Emily is a very engaging speaker and her passion for horses and teaching show in all activities. This clinic provided practical and useful information for the trail and the skills and information presented in this clinic also served to reinforce the everyday riding safety and techniques previously learned in the MRH curriculum."

    - Jen

Elizabeth"It was so great to spend a whole weekend with the horses and going for a trail ride and riding over the obstacles was a highlight to me! Emily is a great trainer and I highly recommend her!"

Anne"My experience with Training for the Trail helped me feel safe and confident out in the wide open world. It can be scary to leave the arena and this clinic provided me the sense of security needed. We took the necessary time in the arena so as to set my horse and I up for success once on the trail. This clinic was packed with all kinds of ways to enhance my relationship with my horse and stay safe and now I feel ready to enjoy a trail ride!"

    - Anne

Traci"Wow! This weekend format is phenomenal! It provided the time and space to put everything I have learned with Emily thus far together: from making clear movement requests to reading the horse's emotions to getting a sense of the unified movements between horse and rider to feeling (and enjoying!) what it is like to be in partnership. Being on the trail added a new intensity because I was fully responsible for my horse's safety and our well being together. This both merited and allowed us to enter into a totally different level in our partnership, as when things came up we know had the skills to work through them and to do it together! Thank you!"

Laura"Training for the Tail was a great experience. It provided the opportunity to practice the techniques and principles I've learned over the last year with Emily. My horse had a wonderful energy on the trail due to our preparation work and it made for a different level of riding connection and enjoyment! A truly wonderful experience!"

"Awesome weekend. Best clinic I've been through with you. My biggest take away was the hunker down. I bet you could teach that at every clinic. When the going gets rough, hunker down. Had lots of fun and learned a lot about safety that I wish I'd known 4 years ago. Probably would have saved me many falls.”

  • Kathy"It is hard to find the words to describe fully enough what the MRH'S trail rides have done to improve the partnership with my young horse and for advancing our training! Emily ALWAYS handles every horse and rider and every situation and challenge with safety in mind. Being out on the trail presents training opportunities you somewhat know you there is a possibility of encountering such as water crossings, bridges or animals in the wild. Then there are situations that arise that are unexpected or unplanned. Every one of these situations are great opportunities to work through with your horse and having Emily there to guide you through these experiences are priceless training moments.

"Not only do we work on the natural obstacles out on the trail, but under Emily's tutelage we work on leg yielding, shoulder-ins or collection. Working on the trails is so much more fun than going around and around doing circles in the arena! I believe the horses welcome the change of scenery as much as the riders do!"

    - Kathy

Morgan"I have been on over 200 trailrides with Emily, as when I first started training and boarding my horses with her in Colorado we went on a trailride practically every week all year round. On EVERY ride I learned something new, fun, helpful, and practical for advancing my horsemanship skills and deeping my understanding of my horses and my horses learned how to be trusty trail partners. Emily's trailrides are a unique way for humans and horses alike to learn while having fun."

Lori"Age does strange things to the mind and body! After trail riding for over 15 years I got to thinking that maybe it wasn't a good idea to ride my wonderful partner Chopper out anymore. I thought something could happen and my 55 year old body wouldn't bounce back as well as it used to. Well, Emily helped to set me straight by having me trail ride with her in a group in which I learned techniques that improved my confidence and partnership with my horse. She is an amazing horsewoman that seems to intuitively know what the horse is thinking! Thankfully, all negative thoughts I had are gone and I am enjoying the trails again with Chopper."

Feather"Breathe, trust, rub....the mantra for the day trailriding with Emily in the MRH Trail Riding program. This little reminder was just one of the many useful tiles and tools I acquire when riding the trails with Emily and it made such a significant impact for me and my horse. Our day, as so many rides before have been, was successful, splendid and oh so fun!"

Anne"This isn't your grandmothers trail ride! Prepare yourself for a day of learning as you and your horse develop partnership around every bend. Emily will give you tips and pointers including how to get your horse to stand like a gentleman when the group is stopped, how to position your body on the steep ups and downs of the trail, and the trick to keeping your horse a safe distance from others whether you're riding in front, in the middle or bringing up the rear. Here's your chance to practice navigating trail obstacles, ride a spook and use your emergency stop outside the arena.

"The lesson begins before you even mount up. Be sure you bring all the trail essentials that were discussed in training for the trail. Your knife or cell phone could save a life in an emergency situation. By the end of the day you'll feel more confident in your ability to enjoy a relaxing trail ride while staying alert and prepared. Trail etiquette isn't just about looking good on the trail, it's about your safety and the safety of your riding partners (both human and equine).

"Oh, and if you enjoy good food and the companionship of other riders, the lunch time pot luck is a perfect opportunity to tell stories and get to know other enthusiasts who share your horsemanship goals. So bring your favorite dish or snack to pass around and join in the lively conversations that are sure to reflect the exciting experience of riding the trails!"

    - Anne

Lisa"I had a wonderful time riding with Emily and the other riders in the MRH program. Learning how to correctly ride up and down hills at a walk and how to set my horse to honor the gait I was asking for, was invaluable to me. To me, this really was taking a lesson to the trail! I appreciated all of Emily's objective criticisms, observations, demonstrations and instructions tremendously. I also appreciate the 'extras' such as, correctly tiring to the trailer, hanging a pail of water versus putting a pail on the ground, mounting on a hill — so thank you for those 'mini' lessons, too. It was truly a great day! I look forward to doing it again soon."

    - Lisa

Nini"An important lesson I learned over the years working with Emily is that trail riding is an "earned privilege". Both horse and human together build confidence and relationship through systematic and sequential groundwork and arena exercises designed to mimic trail conditions. Once out on the trail, the learning and opportunities for horsemanship growth never stops! Rocks, logs, bridges and water crossings are all nature's obstacles to be maneuvered around, walked over and waded through. The culmination is horse and human riding with curiosity, in balance and confident in each other's abilities. I would never dream of embarking on trail riding without such insightful teaching and safe guidance as Emily provides."

    - Nini

  • Judy"Emily's respect for horses comes through in every lesson. Her emphasis on having conversations with your horse or presenting puzzles for them to solve as a means of furthering their learning and the partnership is amazing. She has changed the way my horse and I work together as partners! The Friday night lecture that kicked off this Horsemanship 301 weekend was very good as were the various simulations we did sans horse throughout the weekend to help us understanding the how and the why of what we were then trying to present to our horse."

    - Judy

  • "Emily creates a fun, relaxed and positive atmosphere in a clinic. I valued Emily's ability to give lots of individual feedback and attention even amidst the group riding exercises in the Intro. to Western Dressage clinic. There was lots of feedback about what each student was doing right accompanying her points about what each rider could work on. She takes into account each individual horses breed and past experience when teaching the rider how to best communicate with their horse in that particular moment. She communicates with her students in a manner that is congruent with how she teaches her students to communicate with her horses: clearly, respectfully, softly and effectively."

    - Annie

"I appreciated Emily's clear instruction, no nonsense manner, constructive feedback and the safe environment she created in the Introduction to Western Dressage clinic. Thank you so much for making me and my 'cowboy' horse look so supple, responsive and darn pretty! I can't wait for more clinics!"

"'What am I doing in a dressage class?' I might have asked myself. But after two days spend in Emily's Intro. to Western Dressage clinic I realized that given the correct instruction I can gain confidence in my and my horse's abilities together -- yes, even in dressage! I came away with the knowledge that I can offer the best to my horse and expect the best in return. And we had lots of fun!"

    - Nini

"Thank you Emily for helping me to rediscover soft effectiveness from my core allowing me to best balance and support my horse as he learns. Your support and guidance in celebrating his 'try' was fun and we learned a lot together in two days!"

"I have been a student of Emily's since 2006. The introduction to western dressage is what I am ready for in my journey as a horsewoman and I am grateful for the weekend under Emily's guidance and tutelage. This clinic offered a solid and well rounded approach to the fundamentals of dressage. The skills I learned in this clinic of helping my horse find balance, engagement and proper use of her body will benefit us both in all of our activities together. I highly recommend this clinic for anyone wanting to deepen their partnership with their horse on any level!"

    - Diane

"Emily, you have always been an inspiration to me, both as a horsewoman and a leader. I love and value the way you are continually learning yourself and are able to share. In the Intro. to Western Dressage clinic I liked all the positive feedback and the feeling that my horse and I were improving so rapidly in just two days. I look forward to future clinics!"

"I found Emily's explanation of western dressage to be helpful and enjoyed finding out that this discipline is accessible to anyone and any horse. Covering the various gaits in western dressage and what makes them different from either traditional western or classical dressage was also very valuable. I found Emily's explanation and instruction surrounding the use of the "inside leg to outside rein" to be very helpful. Many riders never learn this and yet she successfully helped all riders in the Intro. to Western Dressage clinic gain a new understanding and appreciation for the importance of this. It helped bring our riding to the next level and allowed us to guide and work with our horses with better clarity and understanding. Because of this clinic, we can do things we never thought we could do, like look like a dressage horse and rider!"

    - Rachael

Karen"Friday's kick-off lecture was both educational and inspiring and really set a great tone for our weekend ahead. The level of skill and expectation progressively and appropriately heightened throughout the weekend, allowing for a stimulating and successful learning environment. Emily has a way with her words that really enabled me to gain some strong visual imagery to benefit my riding. That coupled with her use of the whiteboard, physical demonstrations and various forms of multi-media made for a very effective learning environment. Time literally flew by and my eagerness to try and match what I believed to be attainable with my horse grew! Emily's professionalism and enthusiasm never diminished and she is both knowledgable and gifted when dealing with both students and horses. I would highly recommend this course!"

    - Karen

"Western Dressage is an up and coming discipline in the horse world. It holds high regard to the relationship between rider and horse, with the execution of specific movements through tests. Emily has crafted a way for the student interested n this pursuit to gain a basic understudying of the rules and expectations of this new discipline while preserving the integrity of the horse. It was of terrific value to both be able to practice riding tests and to have them videoed, so that we could benefit from watching ourselves in action. I can't stop thinking about my next lesson with Emily and preparing for competition. I trust that Emily will help get us there."

    - Michele

Judy"I came away from this clinic with a solid understanding of the intent of Western Dressage. and how a test is laid out. The scoring was well explained as was the goal behind the tests and scores. Because of this clinic, I now have the confidence to enter dressage competitions as a means of furthering my education and growth as a horsewoman. Excellent clinic!"

Leisa"This multiple day course provided me a thorough snapshot and base in my knowledge of Western Dressage. Prior to this I had only watched english dressage a little, so I had a lot to learn as a first time participant in the sport. Emily's knowledge, patience and facility allowed me the opportunity to do so with Western Dressage and to continue my growth with my all around horsemanship goals!"

"Thank you so much for a wonderful workshop in "So, You Want to Buy a Horse?". Even after owning a horse for 5 years, I found it incredibly helpful and I got to see all of the places I was so ignorant going into my previous horse relationships! It will be great to have more consciousness going into my next one. It also re-connected me with how important it is for me to actively get back into horses. The handout was excellent and the discussions really helped to clarify things for me. I got a lot out of the time spent observing the horses and their different horsenalities. Emily has an amazing ability to create safety and respect for both people and horses!"

    - Wendy

"I really enjoyed the thoroughness of the material covered in "So, You Want to Buy a Horse?" It was great to have the handout to follow along with and the demonstrations at the end were the perfect way to sum up what we had covered."

"Emily is a tremendous resource both for purchasing/adopting a horse and for horsemanship all around. We plan on utilizing her and her knowledge in the future as much as possible. This clinic was very practical and useful!"

"Emily is a passionate horsewoman who through the 'So, You Want to Buy a Horse?' clinic teaches the how and why organized approach that will help me to have an informed and educated approach to finding my horse partner. The clinic was a great step by step way to think about and proceed with finding and identifying a good match in my next horse partner. Thank you Emily!"

"I think this clinic is great! It was a great length for discussion, lecture and demonstration and was the perfect amount of information for a 'green buyer'. I now know much more about and feel so much more confident about starting the process of purchasing a horse and about the possibility of adopting as well."

"The 'So, You Want to Buy a Horse?' clinic was very informative and the handout was very helpful. Emily is both an inspiring and encouraging instructor and I felt encouraged that I will be able to find a horse to share my life with!

"As a beginner and considering owning a horse, Emily's 'So, You Want to Buy a Horse?' clinic provided me with written procedures and guidelines for how to best proceed in the horse buying or adoption process. She covered a variety of situations and offered a slew of checklists for all the stages leading up to buying a horse. I highly recommend this class to increase your knowledge and understanding of the horse purchasing process before you get yourself into a difficult situation."

Lynn"Following the guidelines that you outlined in your class 'So you want to buy a horse', I now have a wonderful new member of my family! Hope is an 8 y.o. Iclandic mare. Thank you for the wonderful class and for the handout which guided me step by step through the process. Great feeling like an informed buyer!! Thank you and I look forward to classes and clinics ahead!!"

  • Teresa"The knowledge and hands-on skills I learned in MRHT's Equine First Aid clinic have been of huge value to me. When my mare recently injured her leg I knew exactly how to care for the wound and was able to discuss it with my vet with confidence and knowledge. When the vet arrived, he was thoroughly impressed with the prompt and proper first aid I had performed on the wound. Thanks to the Equine First Aid clinic I am now equipped to offer my horse the best possible health and safety care!"

Lisa"I have been desiring a class like this for some time. Now that I have two horses, I often find an abrasion or cut of some sort. With the knowledge gained in this clinic, I can now pre-analyze an injury to determine the best course of action for treatment. I also took away a better understanding of what I as a horse owner should have in my first aid kit and how and under what scenarios to use which items. Having this information will significantly decrease my anxiety when I walk into the barn and find my horse with blood!"

Anne"The day went so fast! When I first thought about spending an entire day learning about first aid, I wasn't that excited. But after taking this course, I wanted it to last longer! • Alicia"I so enjoyed Emily's 'What Trailer?' Trailer Loading Clinic. I was impressed by how Emily made the clinic about the relationship between the horse and their owner. She really understands that the experience owners seek to have with their horse is about communication, trust and building a relationship that is good for both horse and human. In the past, I have been to clinics where the trainer was all about themselves, so it was very refreshing to observe Emily's horse-first approach in her work with these incredible creatures.

"I am so grateful for Emily's time and attention. Attending her clinic provided me with some valuable 'aha' moments that have given me a renewed outlook on working with my mare, Maggie. I love my horse very much and I feel even closer to her now because I am able to better understand her. The horse world could learn a lot from trainers like Emily!"

    - Alicia

Debra"I recently took Emily Johnson's 'What Trailer?' Trailer Loading Clinic and found it extremly benefical. I work at Colorado Horse Rescue and a big percentage of the horses we deal with have issues with trailering. After taking Emily's class, I was able to successfully load a mare into the trailer within 45 minutes. This horse would step in but then immediatly back out. Spending time doing ground work around the trailer and teaching her to turn around in the trailer once she got in allowed her to be comfortable closing the door. This was very important to teach her to feel safe in the trailer as the woman that adopted her is planning on trailering her a great deal for trail riding.

"Prior to Emily's clinic , I may not have gotten her to relax in the trailer or would have spent alot more time trying to safely load her. Emily taught me how to be more creative and stay very calm and patient while working with horses."

    - Debra

Ursula"I loved Emily's 'What Trailer?' Trailer Loading Clinic. There were two things I thought were wonderful about the clinic. The first is it incorporates the basics of movement and ground work skills that are foundational in her program. Emily is great at explaining what she is doing, why she is doing it and how it relates to the task. The second thing I loved was witnessing the relationship of respect and rapport established before my eyes in a matter of a very short time which ultimately lead to the horse successfully and confidently loading into the trailer. This clinic demonstrates that trailer loading doesn't have to be difficult or scary for horse or human. If you love your horse and want to provide it with a positive trailer loading experience you will seriously consider this clinic."

    - Ursula

Kathy"Emily, being a clinician is truly your art and your service. I have great respect for you and how you coached me to load my horse, Corazon, into the trailer verses just doing it for me. You have a special blend of intelligence, sensitivity and flexibility that most trainers do not. You are a rock star — the world awaits you! I would LOVE to have you come to my ranch and offer a clinic for some of my students."

"It was so valuable to be able to see the language of trouble free trailer loading with multiple horses and to be able to see the whole process several times. I valued Emily's 'thinking out loud' as she worked with each horse and found the ample opportunities to ask questions to be very effective for my learning. This clinic is a must for anyone interested in honoring the horse's spirit and being a dependable, effective leader."

    - Patricia

"The breadth of demonstrations with various horses really helped to put the From the Horse's Point of View lecture from the night before into context. It was a highlight for me to see an array of horses to worked with, from a clean slate youngster to older horses with issues, and yet each horse was set up for success and seen through to the completion of their training with the trailer."

    - Devon

"I was completely amazed how the horses responded to Emily's communication and persuasion in the "What Trailer?" Trailer Loading Clinic. In the end, each horse really did prefer being in the trailer to being outside of the trailer. The components of leadership that were repeatedly reviewed in the trailer loading demo was very helpful and really helped to connect the topics discussed in the lecture the night before with the practical application in the trailer loading demo. I really enjoyed this clinic and am looking forward to more in the future."

    - Yvonne

Cathy"So, how do you get a horse into a trailer to trailer her to a training session to train her to get into a trailer? A Catch-22 if ever there was one! I found myself in just this position when, after an hour of struggle, I called Emily to tell her I couldn't make our session. In her wonderfully gracious and accommodating way, she came to my place, spent less than an hour working with Cinnder, who ended up calmly and obediently loading herself into the trailer, turning around and standing quietly at the back of the trailer.

"Then, Emily had me repeat the process which went like clockwork. I know I need more practice to feel really confident that I am doing things correctly, but with Emily's calm, patient coaching, I feel sure that Cinnder and I will overcome this most dreaded equestrian procedure.

"Emily is truly a master horseperson. Her skills, timing, and patience give both horse and human the confidence to do what neither thought they could or would ever do. I am very grateful."

    - Cathy

Michelle"My trailer learning event began due to a friend having difficulty with trailer loading her mare. I suggested that she take a lesson with Emily Johnson. I knew, through the grapevine, that Emily would be able to get the job done while ensuring that the integrity of the horse would stay intact.

"Since I owned the truck and trailer that my friend's horse loaded into, I audited the lesson. Subsequently, my auditing became an eye-opening experience. I was pleased to see a structured, yet flexible training session that yielded results. I liked that Emily quit on a good note and did not overwhelm the student or the horse. Emily relayed that a few more lessons would produce the result of making it the horse's idea to load herself into the trailer. Quoting Emily, "It isn't about the trailer, it's about the relationship between the horse and the handler.

"Meanwhile, I attended the Buck Brannaman clinic with my horse Shelby. After arriving at the clinic, I noted that 4 feet of wire had come out from under my trailer, with the brakes broken as well. After further investigation, a pipe that had been used to string the wire through, had fallen off and was hanging. My mare did NOT load well at all when we left. I was sure that pipe rattled around underneath her while the trailer was moving. This left a bad impression on a horse that normally jumped into the trailer with ease. I put two and two together and determined that I would need to have a lesson with Emily to rebuild what Shelby and I had lost.

"Again, my friend and I tag-teamed the lesson with our mares. After that, we worked two more lessons and I couldn't believe the process or results. Emily was very specific and clear in her instruction, where I needed to stand, my energy, and what to do in a sequential order. My mare responded with joy and again she was loading without being troubled. Alleluia! We weren't doomed!

"To illustrate how my skills were sharpened during my lessons, I had the opportunity to take a 3-year old horse to a team penning event. I did not know this horse and the horse had not been trailer loaded too many times I suspected. It was late and dark leaving the event, and the horse hesitated going into the trailer. Fear crept in. What if I could not get this mare loaded? I needed to get home and go to sleep. I would be here forever. I positioned myself as Emily had instructed and applied the steps she had taught me. It took less than 1 minute and the mare had jumped up into the trailer. The proof was in the pudding. I had no relationship with this horse, but I was able to influence her, without trouble, into the trailer. Can I get another Alleluia?

"Without doubt, Emily was able to teach me, within 3 lessons (I suspect some cases take longer or shorter) how to trailer load. I had never had any problems with my horse before; therefore, never practiced any type of troubleshooting with trailer loading. Additionally, I had responsibility for another young horse that hesitated with trailer loading. That situation was remedied by the lessons I have learned previously with Emily. Thanks to Emily's guidance and insturction I feel confident that I have tools to troubleshoot and now see this dilemma from the horse's point of view."

"I wanted to tell you how excited I was after watching your trailer loading demo. I came home and really practiced, some of which I knew, and also followed your lead on really recognizing every valid 'try'. I will tell you that I have never loaded a horse onto a trailer until then. I tried to do pretty much what you did with the gelding in your demo. And it worked!! My horse loaded, after several tries and a lot of patience and deep breathing on my part. I made the trailer a pretty nice place to just hang out (I watched a horrendous trailering incident when I was younger and have been scared to death since).

"I feel like I've really conquered a major hurdle and am getting ready to adventure out! We practice loading periodically and while it isn't picture perfect yet, it is so much better and easier. From watching and listening to you, my confidence level has soared and I feel excited for the future. I kept saying what you were emphasizing in the clinic, 'Take the time it takes, and it will take less time.' So true!!"

  • Andrea"I had been struggling with anxiety and frustration whenever I needed to trailer my horse. I had zero confidence in maneuvering my rig and was paranoid that I would have to back up! And to make matters worse my horse started to pick up on my unease and would refuse to load. All of that is behind me now having just completed the Truck and Truck Safety and Handling Clinic at MRHT!

"This clinic is packed with useful information and addresses a full spectrum of topics from truck/trailer combinations to hands-on maneuvering of different rigs to what items should be kept in your first-aid kit. I had questions answered that I didn't even realize I had wanted to ask! All of this is wrapped up in a very positive, friendly, and relaxed learning environment. This clinic has put myself and my horse on a path of confidence and comfort every time we hit the road."

Jahsh"Emily is always looking for ways to further educate and support both her students and the horses in her care.

"The MRHT Truck and Trailer Safety and Handling clinic is a great product of her creative teaching style. While the information provided is obviously important to anyone who already owns or will be purchasing a truck and/or trailer, it's also valuable for anyone wanting to expand their range of comfort and competence around horses."

    - Jahsh

Leona"I thoroughly enjoyed MRHT's Truck and Trailer Safety and Handling Clinic. I began shopping for a trailer in the last couple of years, but quickly realized that I needed more information to even know where to begin.

"This clinic provided me with information I didn't even know I needed, such as the equipment to have in case of emergencies and proper trailer maintenance for safety. The hands on experience of hooking and unhooking the trailers, driving and backing where invaluable to my learning. And most importantly, I came away understanding and knowing how to calculate the weights that are important to safety and compatibility between truck and trailer.

"This clinic rounded out my knowledge, helping me to become an educated buyer. Thanks to the Truck and Trailer Safety and Handling clinic I now feel equipped to begin trailer shopping with confidence."

  • “This seminar is invaluable if your desire is to see and feel what your horse is experiencing when in your hands and under your care. It will revolutionize your understanding and will inspire you to be the most beneficial partner possible.”

    - Melanie

“This event helped me to develop myself as a more observant and caring person, especially in relationship with my horse. Emily's honest and consistent method of teaching is refreshing.”

    - Duane

“Everyone, regardless of your previous experience or discipline of choice, should take this seminar. Emily brings the whole concept of feel to life! I have had years of experience and education from a wide range of trainers and no one has come close to the depth of understanding I now have about how I impact my horse. If you want to be a better partner with your horse, this event is a must!”

    - Judy

“I learned a lot about what my presentation to the horse looks like from a feel standpoint. I learned that softer hands when coupled with a stronger energetic feel, can get the job done with my horse. I also gained new insight about the value in leaving judgement of my horse behind and instead extending to them my guidance, leadership, encouragement and support.”

    - Chris

“I wanted to learn about my relationship with horses and how to best relate to them. Though I do not yet own my own horse, I was hopeful that this event would aide in my understanding and experience of partnership with the horses that are in my care. It did and so much more! Through this event, I was taught how important my body language is and how lighter is better and can be so effective when paired with my energetic feel. I loved this seminar and look forward to attending more events in the future. Thank you Emily!”

  • Andrea“My daughter, Brynna, is horse crazy! She has been riding horses for a couple of years, but I was searching for a more structured teaching for her. I signed my daughter up for the Love Horses? Learn Horsemanship! Kids Camp at Mountain Rose Ranch, not fully knowing what the outcome would be, but I have been blown away! Brynna has gained the necessary safety instruction she needs as an early rider and has started gaining the foundational understanding of the rider/horse relationship. Even more, my daughter has gained confidence and leadership skills through this camp. Emily Johnson focuses not only on the fun aspects of horses, but prepares aspiring horse lovers for the reality of the animal/human relationship. I highly recommend Emily and Mountain Rose Horsemanship!”
