"Educating people in the ways of partnership with horses."
The top priority at MRH is creating mutually beneficial relationships between horses and the people who love them. There are two components to the program that work together in developing these successful and long-lasting partnerships: Wholeness Through Horsemanship™ and the Wanted Horse Training Program™.
The Wholeness Through Horsemanship™ program is designed as a progressive and comprehensive curriculum, providing students with a solid foundation upon which to build their horsemanship dreams. Emphasis is placed on understanding the horse's instinctive nature, as well as our own, as it relates to the experience of ultimate partnership with horses. Relationships that are characterized by mutual respect and trust are established through groundwork, after which the privilege of riding may then be enjoyed. Horse owners and enthusiasts alike will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to become their horse's trusted and respected partner, both on the ground and in the saddle.
At MRH, our passion is equipping horse enthusiasts to become well rounded and well versed horsemen and horsewoman. Though our instructional offerings are fun, engaging and enjoyable, we are not in the business of solely providing entertainment through horses. Hence, we do not offer trail rides with no previous horse experience nor hourly horse rentals to students whom are not otherwise a part of the program. What we do offer and provide is a comprehensive curriculum that creates relationships between people and horses which are mutually beneficial — meaning as good for the horse as it is for the human -- and which promotes and honors the safety, integrity and subsequent development of horse and human alike.
MRH offers a broad selection of courses and clinics designed with the safety and success of the student - human and horse alike, in mind. The MRH Courses are the foundation to the program, are more than one day in length and may require prerequisites due to their progressive and comprehensive nature. The MRH Clinics are supplements to the foundational courses, are typically one day in length and do not have prerequisites. Generally, courses are scheduled 4 - 6 weeks apart allowing students time to practice and solidify their newly acquired skills through the means of private and semi-private instruction. Should a student choose to join the program via a private or semi-private lesson format, then they will follow a similar comprehensive and progressive horsemanship curriculum in that chosen format.

You are responsible for filling your spot should you cancel. Please check in with us should we have a wait list.

We reserve the right to cancel, and/or reschedule due to lack of registration or severe weather. If the clinic is rescheduled your tuition will be rolled over to be used for the new event date. Instructor may be notified of cancellation either in person, by email, or by phone. Please note that text messaging is not a permissible means of cancellation.
Private and Semi-private Intensives: The 50% deposit is non-refundable, though two transfer of dates is permitted. A third cancellation of dates would merit no refund nor further transferability.
Auditing: Auditor tickets are non-refundable, but transferable to another individual of your choice.
SAFETY AND ETIQUETTE:
Proper Attire: All participants must wear appropriate gear when around horses. This includes: long pants (either jeans or riding pants), hard-soled, fully enclosed boots with a heel and an approved riding helmet. MRH advises all riders to wear a well-fitted ASTM/SEI Certified helmet fastened securely under the chin regardless of age, discipline or experience. Any person under age 19 is required to wear a helmet. If a rider chooses to not wear a helmet, they do so against the advice of MRH and are accepting all responsibility for the consequences and potential for injury or death relating to the choice to not wear a helmet.
Horse Care: Proper catching, grooming and saddling will be taught in the initial courses, clinics or lessons with instructor supervision. When the participant becomes comfortable and familiar with proper horse care and handling, they are then responsible for preparing their lesson horse prior to the start of the lesson. In order to ensure the full amount of scheduled instruction time, participants should arrive 30 minutes before their scheduled session to perform these tasks and plan on staying at least 15-20 minutes after the lesson to unsaddle, cool down, and groom their horse. If the participant is late and therefore the preparation cuts into the session time, additional lesson time is not guaranteed. In order to fully benefit from your allotted session, plan to arrive early and start on time.
Horse Health: Participant agrees to abide by the barn rules and policies of any facility hosting MRH events. This includes providing any and all documents required by host facility to permit horse on their grounds (i.e. proof of negative Coggins, health certificate, brand inspection).
For events hosted at Mountain Rose Ranch any horse staying the night MUST provide documentation showing vaccinations for Equine Influenza Virus, Equine Herpes Virus (Rhinopneumonitis) and Strangles within 6 months as well as have a current negative EIA/Coggins test (within 12 months). A health certificate (30-day) is needed on all out of state horses. Documentation of the health requirements is requested in advance of the event. Please either email documentation to clinics@mountainrosehorsemanship.com or mail copies to the ranch address.
Barn Etiquette: Participants are responsible for the general cleanup behind their horse at the MRH facility as well as at facilities that host MRH events. Participants are required to follow all barn rules as posted and act in a manner courteous of other people, horses and property.

Groundwork is learning how to understand and communicate with the horse from the ground. The goal is to gain the ability to control the horse's movement, which is how leadership is established in the horse's natural language. Being viewed by the horse as their respected and trusted herd leader is essential, as it helps to ensure safety, success, and a mutually beneficial partnership once on their back. Learn more about the natural language of the horse in Emily's collection of articles.
-
Absolutely not! MRH has a wonderful group of lesson horses available for your learning. In fact, taking horsemanship lessons prior to owning your first horse is highly recommended and is a terrific gift to your future equine partner.
-
Yes. All students begin with the Horsemanship 101 course, as it is the foundation upon which a "sky is the limit" relationship is enjoyed with horses. New students find that it provides them with the knowledge and skills needed to enter the world of horses with confidence. And more experienced students often report that the course filled in the gaps in their understanding of horses and increased their knowledge of the "how" and "why" in horsemanship. You may read about what past students have said about their experience in the Horsemanship 101 course on the What People are Saying page.

At MRH, riding a horse is seen as a privilege that is earned. All students, regardless of prior experience, begin with groundwork in order to gain the position of respected and trusted herd leader. Gaining this position—and the horse's permission to ride which accompanies it—can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, depending on each student's rate of learning.
